A LIFELONG COMMITMENT TO THE COMMUNITY
With an achievement and performance record that spans four decades, John Litzenberger puts his greatest efforts into action and results and puts less emphasis on campaign promises. Here is a glance of just a handful of his accomplishments:
SERVICE TO THE NATION
John Litzenberger served with the United States Air Force as a pilot for over 30 years in both active and reserve capacity, and took part in military operations in the Vietnam War. In addition, he was recalled in support of the first Persian Gulf War and the Global War on Terrorism. He is also a recipient of the Purple Heart.
Litzenberger was a Director to the Air Force's Individual Mobilization Augmentee Program at the Pentagon. He was a Senior US Air Force liason officer to the Egyptian Air Force. He was Chief of the Command and Control Section at the 135th Tactical Airlift Group. He served as Squadron Executive Officer at the 380th Bomb Wing.
In 2001, John Litzenberger was recalled to Active Duty to serve as Director for the Air Force's Agency for National Security and Emergency Preparedness. He oversaw and managed activities including Military Support to Civil Authorities, Emergency Response to Natural Disasters and liason with the Department of Homeland Security for military support.
In 2002, John Litzenberger retired from the United States Air Force with the rank of Colonel, giving him the opportunity to put his full focus on his community.
SERVICE TO THE COMMUNITY
As a 35 year resident of Centreville, John Litzenberger is a longtime participant in community service for Fairfax County. Litzenberger was one of the original founders of the West Fairfax County Citizens Association and served as that organization's President from 1986-1988. He has also been a member of several committees in the Centreville area, including the Land Use Committee, the Education Committee and several Methodist Church Committees.
In 1987, Litzenberger was the recipient of the "Lord Fairfax Award". He was also named Sully District's "Volunteer of the Year" in 2007 by "Celebrate Fairfax".
Litzenberger was appointed by the Board of Supervisors to serve on the Centreville Core study from 1982-1988. He also served as the Sully District Commissioner for the Redevelopment and Housing Authority from 2004 to 2008.
In 2008 John Litzenberger was appointed to a four-year term by the Board of Supervisors, to represent the Sully District on the Planning Commission. In 2012 Litzenberger was reappointed to his second, full four-year term.
While serving as the Planning Commissioner, Litzenberger worked with the business community and county officials to help bring a variety of improvements to the Sully District including athletic fields for youth sports and the high schools, along with additional donations of land and facilities for the county parks.
He also helped negotiate road improvements for the community in the immediate areas of commercial and residential development. All this has resulted in over $10 million worth of donated improvements for the community, without any use of tax dollars.
ACHIEVEMENTS IN THE CIVILIAN AND BUSINESS WORLD
John Litzenberger has also been involved with the civilian air industry, serving as an operations officer at the Federal Aviation Administration and later as a senior management official and consultant at various commercial airports.
As a successful, local business owner, John Litzenberger founded Atlantic Airport Services, LLC, an aviation consulting service which has been serving the industry since 1996. He currently operates his business as the General Manager.
